Congratulations to the Department of Family Medicine's newest Associate Professors, Dr. Mariam Mina, Dr. Shalini Niranjan, and Dr. Chayanika Pal! As of July 1, 2020 they will move from the rank of Assistant Professor to the rank of Associate Professor.November 2019

Congratulations to Dr. Linda Speer, professor and chair of Department of Family Medicine, who was recently named a commissioner for the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Earlier this year, ARC-PA granted our PA graduate program accreditation-continued status until its next review in September 2027. We are proud ARC-PA has recognized Dr. Speer as well as our efforts to enhance the quality of our PA program and improve on our processes and procedures.
October 2019

On October 18th and 19th Christina Bentlage, Lindsey Brillhart, and Maggie Mockensturm volunteered their time to participate in the Toledo Zoo's Little Boo event. The University of Toledo had a festive presence and volunteers from the institution were able to interact with hundreds of families from across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan at the Event. This is the department's second year of participating in this event.

Congratulations to Dr. Coral Matus, who has accepted the position of Interim Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education. Dr. Matus did her undergraduate work at The University of Toledo and received her M.D. from The Ohio State University. She completed a residency in Family Practice at The Toledo Hospital and a fellowship in Faculty Development at the University of Michigan. Dr. Matus joined the College of Medicine and Life Sciences faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in 2016. Dr. Matus has served as Interim Department Chair for the Department of Family Medicine. She also serves as Co-Director Clinical Decision Making and Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education.

On August 29, 2019, Dr. Coral Matus was awarded the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence by Dr. Christopher Cooper, Executive Vice President for Clinical Affairs and Dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. This award honors individuals who have excelled in teaching and acknowledges their commitment to mentoring our students. We thank Dr. Matus for her commitment to the mission and goals of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences and the University of Toledo.

On July 28, 2019, our Glendale Medical East facility officially became the Comprehensive Care Center at the University of Toledo. This state-of-the-art facility places primary care and specialty care clinics, along with a variety of other healthcare services, under one roof. Located at 3333 Glendale Avenue in Toledo, the Comprehensive Care Center offers care for all ages, from infants to the elderly and everyone in between. In keeping with UTMC's long-standing role as a teaching institution, there will be a strong educational component in the new center. the Department of Family Medicine.Ìý Dr. Matus was awarded the Robert T. Tidrick Golden
Apple Award for Teaching Excellence in the Clinical Sciences.Ìý We are proud of Dr.
Matus for this honor and appreciative for her dedication and investment to the education
of our students at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences.

passing their board exams. Dr. Mina, Dr. Nirnajan, and Dr. Pal are now double Board
Certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine.

Please welcome Dr. Paul Schultz to the Department of Family Medicine as our new Residency Program Director and Vice Chair of the department. Dr. Schultz graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI and completed his residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, MI. He has many years of experience as a family medicine residency core faculty as well as program director. Dr. Schultz is board certified in family medicine. After completing residency, Dr. Schultz remained at Providence Hospital as a core faculty member and later as the medical director of one of the residency clinics. During this time, he focused on office transformation, EHR optimization, and quality improvement. From there he moved on to be the residency program director at St. Joseph Mercy Livingston in Brighton, MI, for both the allopathic and osteopathic residency programs. Dr. Schultz has clinical interests in office procedures, primary prevention, and particularly the continuity of the physician-patient relationship. He also has strong interests in physician well-being and promoting the specialty of Family Medicine. When not working, he enjoys the outdoors and spending family time with his wife, Caroline, their four children, and eight grandchildren.

Our department administrator, Hesham Youssef, served as grill master at our employee appreciation picnic. This event was organized by the department to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our staff. This was a nice luncheon held at the new family medicine and geriatric center located at Glendale Medical East. We hope to continue the tradition every summer!July 2015
